Brave Learning Space
The topics we cover in this class will relate to your experiences in life. This necessarily means that they will also lead to some lively and often controversial discussions. While controversial discussions can be uncomfortable, people can learn to live with discomfort in positive ways which may help, not just in the classroom, but in life. Everyone comes to this life with a history that is based upon their life experiences and therefore will have ideas and belief systems that make sense given the context of that life. If we want to learn more about ourselves and the world around us, we must learn to develop the skills of listening and empathizing - not to be right, but to understand.
To that end, it is always my aim that we make any spaces we occupy this semester a space where we can explore and learn from one another. This may mean that occasionally we feel uncomfortable or pushed. As long as we use the proper tools in these situations, they can turn out to be extremely potent. As much as we can, let's remember to be mindful and thoughtful with our words and to give people the benefit of the doubt. If anything needs clarification, let's ask first instead of assuming any intent. And, as always, I'm here and happy to help in any way I can, so if anything needs further processing, please contact me.
